Negative Impacts of Fast Food Consumption for Children
Nowadays, children like to eat fast food in their daily life and the chances that they eat home-made food are gradually decreasing. It is because they think that fast food very favors. “It has good taste and delicious”, they said.
So, what is the fast food? I think that all of you will know the definition about fast food.“Fast food refers to the food that is prepared and served very quickly”, source from Wikipedia. Fast food are including as pizza, burger, instant noodles, fried chicken and others. Fast food can easily to find in everywhere, because there’s a lot of fast food companies near us such as Pizza Hut, MC,D, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and others.
Even the fast food have many benefits like quick to prepared, cheap, and can buy it everywhere, you should to know that fast food is very dangerous if we have consumed too often. It is because fast food contents a higher amounts of salt, sugar, fat and calories. The article of MD-Health published that eating fast food for a long time can causes obesity, cholesterol, liver damage, cardiovascular disease, environment impact, and the students achievement in schools.
First, take an example of obesity. According to the article “The Dangers of Eating Fast Food”, Obesity is becoming the largest public health concern as we enter the new millenium, especially among children. Obesity increases the risk for high cholesterol and fatty streak development, which translates into greater risk for cardiovascular disease.
One meal at a fast food restaurant may contribute a significant amount of fat and sodium for the day. For example, McDonald’s new Spanish omelet bagel contains 710 calories, 40 grams of fat, 275 mg of cholesterol and 1,520 mg of sodium. High fat diets and bigger portions in combination with decreased physical activity play major roles in the obesity epidemic.
Second, it was really surprising that one of the study has discovered a relation between consumption of fast foods and a decline in testing ability among grade-school children. The study find the facts that fast food lower student test scores by 20%.
Lower levels of academic achievement discovered among children who ate significant amounts of fast food
"There's a lot of evidence that fast-food consumption is linked to childhood obesity, but the problems don't end there," says Kelly Purtell, lead author of the study and assistant professor of human sciences at Ohio State University. "Relying too much on fast food could hurt how well children do in the classroom."
The study, titled "Fast Food Consumption and Academic Growth in Late Childhood," was published in the journal Clinical Pediatrics. It state the results as follows:
More than two thirds of the sample reported some fast food consumption; 20% reported consuming at least 4 fast food meals in the prior week. Fast food consumption during fifth grade predicted lower levels of academic achievement in all 3 subjects in eighth grade, even when fifth grade academic scores and numerous potential confounding variables, including socioeconomic indicators, physical activity, and TV watching, were controlled for in the models.
This study shows that fast foods have an impact on test scores of children, it doesn't explain what it is about such junk foods that leads to such results. However, other studies have pointed to the fact that fast foods are void of certain memory-boosting nutrients, like iron, that are ideal for cognitive development. They also show that the high-sugar and high-fat diets that are typical in a fast food lifestyle are harmful when it comes to learning and immediate memory.
So, do you want to improve your family health especially for your children?Although your children may be like fast food because of their taste. Think twice before deciding to give permission to your children to eat fast food, and remember all the bad impacts from fast food. It is really important to eat healthy food and make good choices when deciding to eat something. Don’t be lazy and pick up fast food on your daily life. Make the right choice and eat some vegetables can be the smart choice for you and your children.
